Literary technique (literary device) - a specific way for a creator to more effectively communicate meaning to their audience.
Literary techniques allow writers to bring their texts to life in the minds of their readers: they can be used to add colour, flavour and spice to language.
This is the second of two guides to literary techniques. In the first guide we looked at the different types of figurative language that writers can use to communicate meaning more effectively to their readers. Here, we focus on the different literal (or non-figurative) ways that creators can seek to engage their audiences.
Understanding each of these literary techniques gives us more confidence when analysing the texts we come across in the classroom. And, when it comes time to compose our own texts, we can use these techniques to make our own work more creative and compelling.
